How a gym can actually be COUNTER PRODUCTIVE to your weight loss efforts.

  • 1.  Their weight machines promote un-natural movements.

A natural movement or functional movements by definition are movements based on real-world situational biomechanics that usually involve multi-planar, multi-joint movements, which place demand on the body’s core muscles.

Example: Seated leg curls on a machine are not functional.   It’s a movement we don’t use in real-world situations that make it un-natural.  In fact, it’s down right asking to damage your anterior cruciate ligament (ACL)!

A great functional replacement exercise would be a squat. Functional in every day activity as picking things up off the ground, multi-joint in nature that alleviates stress on the ACL vs. seated leg curls.

Ever see a baby squat? Perfect form from the first time they do it.  That’s functional as our bodies were intended to move that way.Unfortunately, most of those machines in the traditional gyms provide similar negative consequences as my example above.

  • 2.  Low intensity.

There are many reasons why we never hit the intensity we need.  Here’s a small list I created.

- Embarrassing your self in front of others
- Lack of equipment to keep track of managing your rest periods
- Busy talking to others
- Watching TV in the gym
- Waiting in line for a machine or weights to free up

If you are doing any of these, you are wasting your time!

  • 3.  Lack of guidance.

Gyms try to be hands off.  They provide little to no instructions on using their equipment.

There’s nothing worse than going into something and training incorrectly.  In the end, you only get incorrect movements.  Incorrect movements are unsafe and can cause injury.

  • 4.  Workouts vs Programs.

Most people like to go to gyms and just do workouts according to how they feel at that moment when they walk into the gym and even worse, they repeat the same workout every day.

The problem with repeating workouts is that the body will adapt to whatever you do and it will get easier each time. For your body to benefit from it again you have to do the workout harder and longer to continue getting results otherwise your results will taper off and decline considerably. You will hit the dreaded ‘workout plateau’.

Here’s an example.  Try running a mile every day.  By your 5th day, a mile won’t even get your heart rate up. You’d have to run 2 miles by that point to get the same benefit as day 1.

A stagnant workout routine will push you to the point of diminishing returns very quickly. Now a program is a series of workouts prescribed over a period of time to obtain a certain goal as efficiently as possible.

Now, don’t get me wrong, traditional gyms can be ok, but there are no good unless you know what you need to know once you get there.

I have this amazing solution that I want you to be part of.

Yes You, myself, and my specially trained team that I work with on a daily basis.

Stay tuned as the next email I’ll go into details!

Hi Arnel. Thanks to information I keep reading in your emails, amongst other’s, I now do NOT practise any of the above as I can see how counter productive they have been for myself and the clients I train. Keep up the great work you do for us online.

Very interesting and clear advice. I totally agree. I’ve seen that myself. If one doesn’t change the way/amount of exercises, he/she will gain exactly nothing from the gym. Eventually he/she will get tired after a short while and even stop going to the gym.

All of your a/m information is true. I have never been a big fan of machines. Most you can either sit, recline or laydown on….sounds like a “lazy boy”. Low intensity is another huge point you make. Yes, something is better then nothing, but during the Stanley Cup playoffs, people in my gym were glued to the tube motionless I thought vultures were going to encircle the gym. Lack of guidence is another huge factor, either blind leading the blind or instructors who forget they are dealing sometimes with beginners fresh off the street who have not owned a pair of runners in years. Also athletes do not always make the best coaches. My only point negative point to your article is your example of running a mile for 5 days straight. Most would be broken by then or earlier. HR would be the last thing on their mind. The example I use is that if a person does the same thing day in and day out, they tend to look the same day in and day out.

    Cheers, Jimmy.

This is GOOD information……… I have injured joint tissue in the past and also during Re-hab on an injured limb. Even the physicaltherapist had me doing things WRONG!!! My shoulder nearly locked up from improper movement during re-hab. I started doing what felt natural to my movements and recovered well.

You are so right. My body can easily adapt and I do find it difficult to push up the notch to get more from the effort I am putting out. If I take the time to go to the gym, I want it to count since it takes a good amount of time out of my morning.

hi! i fully agree with u, i see a lot of that happening to people at the gymn.myself i am a TT member so i dont have time to play at the gymn, i dont have chat friends so that means no one to disturb me when i’m doing my work-outs. Another thing most of the people are not familiar with body weights which i am a beneficiary of, thanks to Mr Ballentyne.

Point is, i dont ever waist time when i am at the gymn.

That is so true, I remember the instructors in my gym could never be able to give me personalized advice. After a few days I just started doing whatever I felt like doing. I even wasted time in the gym talking to others. In the end I didn’t achieve what I dreamt of. Hopefully your next article could throw some light :)

I couldnt agree more with your assessment of exercise. The only machine that I use in my workouts is the c2 rower. I will occasionally walk on the stairmaster as a cooldown from an intense 20-30 minute full body workout.

Thank you please keep sending info as I love what ur saying its all true and I can relate to that. I live in Marrakech and cant believe the way people here workout, they have very little knowledge within the fitness industry. People enter the gym with thongs or flip flops as I would call them and then begin to train with heavy weights cant believe iT !!!

I’m totally in agreement with you! I have been studying the martial arts for the last 4 years and they repeatedly instruct us in the same format as you just discussed. A wise quote for this is the definition of INSANITY is “doing the same thing over and over and expecting different results”. Your workouts that I’ve downloaded are definitely keeping my muscles confused and developing in ways I’ve not had before. I’m 58 years old, too!

Nice work. For most of the reasons above I primarily train in my own home gym I have named ‘The Pit’. About 200kg of free weights, bars, dumbbells, adjustable bench and a squat rack are all I have and all you need to train hard. No fancy equipment, no fluff!!!

Really? It really is excellent to witness anyone finally begin addressing this stuff, however I’m still not really certain how much I agree with you on it all. I subscribed to your rss feed though and will certainly keep following your writing and possibly down the road I may chime in once again in much more detail. Cheers for blogging though!
